How To Stop Procrastinating

Procrastination is the silent assassin.  Many people’s lives are ended or never even began because of tis intangible but deadly force.  Procrastination effects everybody at one time or another, and some people have been affected by it so much that they start to see themselves as procrastinators and make it part of their identity. The most powerful motivator we have is to be congruent with our identity, so when it gets to this stage the silent assassin has done it’s job.

It’s an unfortunate thing procrastination and there is nothing that can be done about it.  It is an outside force, like an airborne virus, that once inhaled, that’s it.  No cure or remedy, you just have to live a life of desperation, frustration and unfulfilment.

How true does that last paragraph smell?  Smells like BS right?…  Yes it is a complete Belief System that procrastination in an outside force and the truth is that we create it internally as a protection mechanism to prevent us from possible pain in the future.  Ant the truth is also that this doesn’t serve us at our higher levels and while procrastination is still part of our lives we will never realise our true potential and be able to self actualise.

So… how to stop procrastinating?  Well quite simply all it takes is an awareness.  It is becoming aware that procrastination is a choice that you make and the greatest power we have is the ability to choose our internal state and attitudes of mind.

Often procrastination is the fear of moving forward, of stepping into unchartered territory as this can bring up other fears such as “what if I fail”, “what if it doesn’t work out”, “What if I get hurt” or “what if I get rejected”.

The antidote to procrastination is of course Action.  So when we become aware that we are procrastinating we can simply say to ourselves “I wish to choose again, and I wish to choose action.”

This is all it takes to shift the energy and the more you say that statement, the more powerful your ability to act will become.

There are a series of three questions you can ask yourself that will really put the situation into prospective for you.

  1. What’s the worst that can happen?
  2. What’s the best that can happen?
  3. What’s most important to me out of these two?

You see, when you look at the worst possible outcome, we generally realise that we can handle it, especially if we write it down.  When we then write down the best possible outcome, it becomes obvious that the risk is well worth it when we ask the third question and compare the two.

To really get practical now and get you moving on with whatever it was that you were procrastinating about, you need to chunk it down.  As the saying goes, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.!”  And probably chunking the journey down into 20 miles per day would be do-able for your average person in good health and fitness.

So.. work out the small action steps you need to take each and every day that will allow you to achieve that dream or project that you had been procrastinating on.  You don’t need to see every step as that will be revealed as you move forward.  Just the first few is enough for starters.  Once you start doing this you will build momentum, the fear will vanish and you will be empowered and feeling very powerful in your ability to manifest your reality.  When would it now be a good time to start. :-)
