The Price Of Mastery And Becoming Outstanding In Any Field

The price of mastery and becoming outstanding in any field is actually very simple, but it is just not easy. It can all be boiled down to 10,000 hours. Yes if focus on one craft for 10,000 hours then we will surely master it. Often we need masterful instruction to become masters ourselves, but in some masters are self taught.

Check out the dance in the video below. People watch it in awe and say “Wow amazing…such talent“. What most don’t realise is the 10,000 hours of hard work that went into getting to this level. growing up, those dancers would have been practicing in the dance hall everyday, for up to three hours at a time.

Watching TV, hanging out with friends, going to the movie theatre and sleeping in at weekends would have to be kept to a bare minimum. There is a price for success in life! And to become a master and stand out in ones chosen field then a completely different life to those around us must be lived.

When we look deeply into the life of anyone that has mastered anything, a common thread seems to appear. That commonality is 10,000 hours of focused practice. If we break that down to three hours a day, then we can become a master in 10 years.

In Malcolm Gladwell’s New York Times Bestselling book “Outliers The story of success he covers this topic in depth with studies of musicians, athletes, software billionaires, to name a few, and what he found was that they weren’t simply born with this amazing ability or skill set, or have fairy dust sprinkled over them. They had all put in at least 10,000 hours of focused study and practice to get to the level of achievement, that most can only dream of.

The difference with them is that they took their dreams and acted on them consistently everyday for at least 3 hours. Many folks think that “The Beatles”, which are probably the most famous band in history, just got lucky, was in the right place at the right time, or for those that really appreciate their music may think that they simply had a God gifted talent.

What most don’t know about “The Beatles” is that their time spent in Hamburg was filled with an uncommon and ridiculous amount of time playing to live audiences. They would play for eight hours a day, eight days a week, in the numerous bars and clubs that Hamburg offered. This is where they honed their musical skills, electric stage presence and became masters of what they did.

Many musicians may play a couple of night a week for a live audience and then get together on weekends to practice. They then wonder why they are not getting signed and becoming mega famous. Must be the luck of the draw they think!

There are no excuses, we either decide to become masters or we don’t. But don’t be fooled into thinking that it is an easy road, because it is not. It can mean many seeming sacrifices and at times it can be a lonely road, because what we practice in private we get rewarded for in public.

We must start with a vision and keeping that vision in mind, take consistent action on it every day. This is how we become successful, masterful and outstanding in any field we so choose!
