The Power Of Presence And Certainty In The Face Of Adversity
The Power Of Presence And Certainty In The Face Of Adversity
The day before travelling across the world to be at the Empower Network Chicago event, It came to my attention that Chicago was under water in some of the worst floods ever recorded. I saw a daunting photograph on Facebook of cars floating down the road.
I searched the extent of the flooding on Google and the first thing I read was an article saying to stay away from Chicago as there were major delays in flights and all public transport. For some reason this did not deter me and I continued with my travel plans.
When I was checking in at the airport, the lady on the desk asked for my ESTA. “What is that I asked”? She told me that it was a form that everyone had to fill out before travelling to the US and it had to be completed online 48 hours before travel, or else you could not enter the United States.
Most people would probably call it quits at this stage, if they had not already done so after seeing cars floating down the road of the city that they were going to.
My flight was from Alicante in Spain, changing in Madrid and onto Chicago from there. After more questioning, the lady said that she could allow me to go to Madrid but could not check me any further. I took this option and flew to Madrid.
Before flying, I called Victoria’s sister, who was staying at our house and asked her to go online and fill out the form for me while I was travelling to Madrid. I texted her all the relevant details while sitting on the plane, before take off.
My partner Victoria had an hour and a half drive home after leaving me at the airport, so that is why I thought it best to contact her sister.
Even though the airport staff in Alicante told me with all their certainty that I could go no further than Madrid, it did not phase me and I knew as long as I stayed present and certain, the universe would bend to my wishes.
I knew as long as I stayed present and certain, the universe would bend to my wishes.
When I landed in Madrid, I received a text message with my application number and that a copy of the form had been sent to my email. This still did not mean that I would be able to go to Chicago, as it needed to be completed 48 hours before travel and I needed a printed copy.
Time was also of the essence as my flight had circled Madrid for an extra half an hour before it was allowed to land. I had 20 minutes before my flight to Chicago closed and it was in another terminal, 30 minutes away!
I felt a little panic rising in me as I looked around the massive airport with no clue on were to go. To my advantage I had only brought hand luggage with me, or else I would have no chance. I shook it off and after running to a few desks, I was given a hand written boarding pass, and told that I needed to run as my flight was boarding.
While running for my flight which was closing in a few minutes and on the other side of the airport, I realised that the lady didn’t seem to understand what I told her about my online application and instead thought that I had lost my boarding card. Oh well can’t stop now, my only chance was to keep going.
My high level of fitness stood me well and I made the 30 minute journey in about 8 minutes, that included a two minute train ride, which I timed perfectly, as the doors just closed as I got on. I knew that the universe was conspiring in my favour and I stayed present and certain and held my Chicago vision.
There was a huge queue, to go through airport security which is always heightened for trips to the US. I had no choice but to squeeze in at the front, much to the annoyance of two large Dutch guys who tried to barricade me out of the queue, but in the end my certainty overcame their doubt and I managed to slip through.
Now it was crunch time, would they let me on the aircraft without this form. I walked up to security in a state of complete presence and certainty, showed them my passport and hand written boarding card. They let me through, and then the final hurdle was getting onto the plane. All other boarding cards were scanned in, but mine she took and had to go and look me up on the computer.
She came back, smiled and handed me my boarding card and wished me a pleasant flight. This is the power of presence and certainty in the face of adversity.
