The Miracle of Balancing Perceptions – Think like a Jedi!
The Miracle of Balancing Perceptions – Think like a Jedi! (continued from yesterday!)
I moved accommodation to the remedial troop were I began a 5 month journey to recovery. I accepted my situation and decided that I would use it to my advantage. As long as I was moving forward I was happy. Even though I was on crutches, I could still swim, do upper body workouts and learn military tactics.
In those months I became fitter than I ever could have imagined and by the time I was inserted back into training I was a super recruit! I broke the assault course term record and my level of fitness and soldiering ability was higher than anyone else in my troop.
My final 13 weeks of commando training became a joy. My new training team held me in high regard and the other recruits looked to me for guidance.
Upon pass out I was posted to my number one choice unit and embarked on the most amazing tour of North and Central America, including many of the Caribbean islands. I got to do arctic training that year as well, meaning that I was arctic and jungle warfare trained in less than a year out of training.
And here’s the thing! Every single one of my original troop was sent to Scotland to guard nuclear submarines for two years…the most boring job a Royal Marines Commando could have. The rest of my career was exceptional and laced with good fortune. I was so grateful that that I broke my leg!
After this experience and what I subsequently learned from it, I have always looked for the seed of greater benefit in everything. This has helped me balance my perceptions and keep my head when all around me seems to be falling apart…but it never is, it is simply reorganising at a higher level.
I also don’t allow myself to get to elated by fantastically positive events because this often sets us up for big fall. I stay centred, present and grateful. This is jedi like thinking at it’s best!
There is always a balance to every fantastically positive event as well as to every terrible negative event. This is universal law. I could give you numerous powerful examples of this from my life, but this one was the first that gave me the realisation.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not always in a zen like balanced state, but the trick is to be able to re-centre as quickly as possible after an event has occurred which has unbalanced the perceptions.
Most things take me less than 5 minutes to rebalance from and often it can simple be done by asking some simple questions in the head such as:
“what is the benefit of this situation?” “what else…what else…what else?”
“What empowering meaning can I give this?”
“What is great about this that I am not getting?”
Then I have two mantra’s that I have ingrained through continuous repetition!
“Every adversity holds within it the seed of equal or greater benefit”
“Everything that happens, is there to serve me in some way”
Now you know how to think like a Jedi and overcome any perceived challenge!
