The Hero’s Journey! Are you on it?
The Hero’s Journey! Are you on it?
There is a pattern that is in the psyche of every human and was first brought to light by author Joseph Campbell.
Joseph Campbell called it The Hero’s Journey. He stated and demonstrated how nearly all the great and classic stories in history follow a certain theme and set of principles.
This theme is not just reserved for story telling but is also apparent in the lives of each of us.
The Hero’s Journey takes the individual from the known world into the unknown world and on the way he or she will encounter a number of tests, until such times as they will return to the known world with some sort of elixir or wisdom that they can then help the world with.
George Lucas was a student of Joseph Campbell and based the whole Star Wars series on what he learned from Campbell.
The success of Star Wars is largely to do with Lucas following the stages of the hero’s Journey to a tee! Unconsciously the audience relates to this pattern and literally can’t get enough of it!
I notice the hero’s journey play out in my life over and over again. When I travelled to Japan to study martial arts I went through each stage of the journey, stepping into a unknown world, meeting with a mentor and going through many tests before one day returning with new skills and wisdom to share with others.
My message and warning to you here is this—when you hear the call to adventure—take it!
I believe that I have stepped up each time I received the call and because of it, my life is much richer. I have noticed many others who have refused the call and because of it they are not maximising their time here on this planet.
Receiving the call means stepping into the unknown, out of our comfort zone and into a new land, whether it be actual or metaphorical. This can be a scary thing!
Refusal of the call means stagnation. It is limiting our potential and will lead to dissatisfaction and unfulfillment further down the line.
An individuals life shrinks when they refuse the call and expands when they step up to the call to adventure!
It took reading two books for me to fully grasp the concept so my intention is not to try and inform you all about it in a few short paragraphs.
My intention is to bring you to a new awareness, especially when you receive the call to adventure-for the consequences for not taking it are much greater than the consequences for taking it, even if it might not seem so in the moment.
Todays power question: “What grand and glorious adventure can I take today?”
Todays power statement: “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all!”
With appreciation,
