One Life Changing Mindset Shift! This changed my life!!

“How long is it going to take?” is a question I used to get sometimes when I worked as a personal trainer and I also hear it sometimes as a martial arts instructor! These days I am hearing it more and more in the trending online business world.

“How long is it going to take for me to get rid of my belly?”
“How long will it take until I get a beach body?”
“How long will it take for me to get my black belt?”
“How long will it take until I know how to defend myself?”
“How long will it take for me to make a full time income online?”

I know when I hear those words that I have my work cut out for me and so does the person asking the question. They will generally require a lot of outside motivation, and for them to have lasting success they will need to shift their identity. More often than not they will quit on their goal before reaching it.

The person who wants to get the beach body, needs to shift their identity to being an athlete. Once they see themselves as an athlete then they won’t just workout for the summer beach body and then stop, but they will work out for life and the length of time will no longer matter because it is their lifestyle.

I personally received a good and bad lesson from watching the Karate kid when I was a kid. “Belts mean nothing” was Mr Miyagi’s teaching to Daniel-san.

I took this on and refused to go to any gradings as I equaled it with being shallow. I loved martial arts and the fulfilment I received from it, and the significance from a certificate was of no interest to me. 

I was a rogue martial artist for years, refusing to go to any gradings and training in various styles- until one day when I was training in Japan and my sensei insisted on giving me a black belt.

Looking back I can see how my thinking was limited and I am glad that I accepted what was given to me, as it allowed me to become a teacher myself and open up my own dojo’s.

On the flip side, I have had students that have been so focused on the grade that as soon as they received their black belt I never saw them again. Little did they realise that black belt is only the foundation and the real magic happens in the years after that with continuous training.

The people that ask how long will it take for them to make it online, or become financially free, it is the same thing. To have a successful online business that makes you financially free will mean that you have to shift your identity to one of being an entrepreneur and a marketer.

If you have resistance to either of these words then you will most likely struggle. When I first started out in business, I was filling in some forms with my business partner and in the box that asked for employment status, I wrote “Entrepreneur” and my business partner wrote “Self Employed”.

That may seem like a small thing, but identity shift is a thin line, and little shifts can make a big difference. That same business partner went back into full time employment for somebody else, while I continued on my roller-coaster ride as an entrepreneur.

So the truth about all this is that it doesn’t matter how long it takes when it is who you are!

It was just over ten years ago when I changed my identity to entrepreneur and I am still not a multi-millionaire. But I will be! How long will it take? Well…it doesn’t matter! 😉
