My Secret to Success! All Jedi’s do this!

I can give you my secret to success in one word…Role-models! Or is that two words! Well lets make it one word and lets call it modelling! Modelling the success of others is the fast track to making you successful at whatever you want to do in life!

Modelling can come in various forms. When I was a child, I looked around me and there was no one I knew who I was inspired by. That was the simple truth. What did inspire me was the actors I saw on the big screen. I was inspired by Bruce Lee and later Jean Claude Van Damme.

They seemed to have a presence, confidence and were able to do things with their body’s that most other people could only dream of. I wanted what they had, so I modelled what they did, as far as I knew anyway.

I practiced their movements and went to martial arts classes for expert instruction, and after three decades of consistent training, have now at least equalled and in some areas surpassed their skill level. If I didn’t have them as role-models then that would have never happened.

When I wanted to master communication, I looked to the best speakers and communicators in the world and went to them for training. I studied their language patterns, tonality and body language, and I went from being a below average communicator to being told by others that I was world class.

I quite simply owe my success to modelling the success of others. Without role-models we will be lost at sea. Role-models give us a standard or a bar in which we can measure our progress and more importantly a belief in what is possible.

Think of the high jump in track and field. The athlete leaps over the bar and then the bar gets raised and provides a new opportunity for a higher level of performance. Without the bar being there, the jumpers would never leap so high.

Then there is the technique. The game of high jump completely changed when someone came along by the name of Fosby and instead of scissor kicking over the bar, they leapt backwards and flopped over the bar. Everyone then modelled this superior technique and everyones performance improved dramatically, and today the Fosby flop is performed by everyone in high jump.

In business, all we have to do to be successful is to look to other successful business models and model them. Do you know how much Wendy’s fast food outlet invests in location research?

Not a penny! They just look to where the most profitable Macdonalds are situated and they plonk a Wendy’s right beside it. This is a type of modelling, be it a bit sneaky!

Modelling is the fast track to success in anything you wish to do and more specifically having role-models in which to model can provide the inspiration.

To know if someone is going to be successful all I have to do is ask them who their role-models are. If they hesitate, then they are not clear. Some people literally don’t have any and if that is so then by default the people around them will be their role-models, whether it be their friends, family members or parents.

There is nothing wrong with this, but if you really want to master anything in your life then you need to model those that have already mastered it. A young Padawan becomes a Jedi by learning from a Jedi Knight and undergoing the training that they went through. This is the secret to success!
