How to learn like a genius

As much as the word “Secret” is bandied about, there is actually a secret to learning like a genius. There is one understanding that when you get it will make all the difference and you will start learning like a genius.

 

The other day I mentioned to Victoria that I was using some advanced NLP strategies with a client to great effect. She asked what it was and I talked the script out to her and when it is a good time to use it.

We had both completed our NLP Master Practitioner course back in 2006, but she said that she couldn’t remember these advanced NLP strategies.

Victoria’s mind works very quickly and she often picks things up faster than I do. It is usually on the third go or angle at looking at something that I actually get it, but I seem to get it on a deeper level.

So Victoria kept probing me for how I remember such things and also how I know when to use them. It was a good question and the answer reveals the secret to learning like a genius.

I learn things with the mindset that I am going to have to turn around and teach it to someone else.

Why do I do this? is the next question. I do this because my self image is that of a teacher.

How did I develop this self image then? Well I remember watching martial arts movies when I was a child like the Bruce Lee movies and the most desirable person to be was always the Master.

So I grew up with a desire to be a master, and so everything that I intentionally learn I do with the mindset that I am going to teach this to others, or I am going to use this to help others.

If you flew into a foreign city on holiday and a taxi driver then drove you to your destination on the other side of the city. If you were then asked to drive the route by yourself, would you be able to? Chances are most people will not.

If your reason for going to that city is you are working at an event and part of your job will be to collect people from the airport and drive them across the city, will you pay more attention to the route? Right…of course you will. You will probably take notes and use mental imagery and pick out certain landmarks as reminders as well.

This is the very simple distinction and shift in perception that you need to not only learn like a genius, but also think like a genius and be a genius.
