How To Become An Early Riser – 3 Top Tips!
I like to ‘Rise @ 5’ as I like to call it, but it doesn’t always happen—especially in the winter as the mornings are cold and dark—I tend to hibernate a bit more.
There are many benefits to being an early riser, but some of them are not so obvious.
Psychologically, you feel like you are getting a head start on the day and are less likely to get into overwhelm or feel like you are playing catch up on your to do list. Being early to rise can then be a form of stress relief.
Starting the day off ‘on the right foot’ also tends to have a knock on affect. We all know the feeling of sleeping in and then rushing out the door leaving a half finished breakfast on the table, just to get to an appointment or go to work. That stress tends to stay with us throughout the day.
There is a reason why many spiritual texts recommend being early to rise to then carry out the spiritual practice, whether it be praying, chanting or meditating!
Humans are like giant radio transmitters and receivers, so when most other people are sleeping there is much less interference so we can think much more clearly, and even better receive divine wisdom, if you will!
When I first learned of this it made sense to me from my understanding of astrophysics. I was one of a handful of specialised Royal Marines, hand picked to do a long range patrol signallers course.
We learned how the atmosphere has 5 layers which change at night. A radio signal that is sent in the day time will bounce off the stratosphere and back down to earth, continuing this bouncing effect until it dissipates.
At night time a radio signal sent upwards will keep going up and out into space as the atmosphere has shifted and its properties are different. So depending on whether it was day or night would depend on what type of radio antennas we would use.
In daylight we would send the signal upwards and bounce it back down to earth off the stratosphere and at night we would send it skimming along the earth.
I state this example only to point out that there is more going on with the earth and with our bodies and brains than we often know or is visible. There is a reason why there is something that seems magical about getting up really early.
As well as spiritual practices, early mornings are the best times for creativity and that is why I tend to write first thing in the morning.
Many creative people stay up late to work on their craft, whether it be painting, music, writing or some other form of creative work—they find that they can focus and connect more at these times.
The down side to staying up late is that it is going against the natural rhythm of the body. It is much better to learn to be an early riser than a night owl. Being an early riser or a night owl is not who you are, but is a conditioned way of being!
When I looked into the lives of various outstanding people both living and past, I noticed that at least 80% of them were early risers. When I look back at different times in my own life I can also see a pattern of success matched with times when I was early to rise.
My 3 tips for ingraining the habit of being early to rise are:
1. Go to bed early! Even if you can’t sleep, get into the habit of it and simply lie in the dark and rest. If I can’t sleep then I use my mind to do a rampage of appreciation or I put my attention on my vision and refine it in my mind.
2. Have an accountability partner that you meet with in the morning, or have a Skype or Facebook group that you check in with first thing upon rising. Let each other know that you are up and what you are doing.
3. Have something worthwhile to be getting on with when you get up, whether it be a morning exercise or yoga routine, writing, or something business related. Having some of your biggest daily tasks completed before 8am is a powerful thing and will set you up for a successful day.
Todays power question: “How might being an early riser benefit my life?” (Write down as many benefits as you can and this will act as a powerful motivator.)
Todays power statement: “I am an early riser and I have the most productive mornings!”
Please do not underestimate the potency of these questions and statements. You literally have the power to speak the world into existence with your words!
