How To Be A Great Leader – Leadership qualities You Must Develop!

There are many misconceptions about leadership and what it takes to be a great leader! Learning how to be a leader is actually simpler than you might think!

I wanted to be a leader when I was younger, but I didn’t think I was cut out for it. I thought that leaders talked a lot and would always take control of situations and people. This really wasn’t me.

I was quiet and didn’t feel the need to talk when in a group of people unless I was required to. I was happy for someone else to take control of the situation and make decisions.

The truth is that I was an introvert and did not feel the need to control people. Some people are naturally extrovert and have a control mentality, but this does not necessarily make them good or effective leaders. Sometimes they behave this way out of a deep insecurity.

What I didn’t realise is that I was a leader already, but I just didn’t understand what true leadership was and so I had a perceived identity and self image for myself which was false.

A true leader is someone who leads themselves first. They don’t conform to what everyone else is doing. They have courage in their own convictions and will make their own path in life.

A true leader does not require followers, but often as a by-product will pick them up. When people tell me that they are a fan or follower of me, I feel a little uncomfortable with it and see that they haven’t really got my message. But when people tell me that they are a student of mine of that they study my teachings or are inspired by my example, then I smile and see that they got it!

The best leaders are those that lead by example. As Gandhi famously said “be the change you wish to see in the world”. I say “be the example that you wish to see in others”.

Do not spend your time trying to improve or change people. Spend time changing and improving yourself. When others see your light shining then they will be attracted to and want more of that for themselves. You shining your light inspires others to shine theirs.

A true leader will develop and bring out the leader in others. True leaders are not interested in fans and followers, they want to see you step up and be the leader!

The greatest leaders are those that are devoted to service and inspiring others. If you get an education from me then that’s great, but if I can inspire you to unlock your own gifts and talents, then you get an education from yourself that is unlimited!
