Are You Living Someone Else’s Life? Open Up And Find Out!
Sometimes it can be the smallest distinctions that can give us the biggest life change.
Most people are going through life and are not being themselves!
How do I know this? Very simply by the words that come out of their mouth!
Most people are living lives that are dictated by the expectations of those around them, and through the understanding of psycholinguistics it is very clear to me when someone is living a life that they think they should be living based on the values of others.
The ‘others’ generally fall into the category of parents, religious leaders, school teachers and social circles.
Our choice of career is often not what we would have loved to have done, but is often what was expected of us, so lets use this as an example so you can see the powerful tell tale signs of our words.
I should keep this job.
I have to go to work now.
I ought to work harder.
I need to meet this deadline.
I have got to go to work.
This way of talking reveals that you are not being yourself and are not living a life or working a career based on your highest values. It shows that you are living up to the expectations of others.
It is the classic, little Jimmy gets job in the mill because that is were his father worked and his father worked and were his older brother and uncle worked. But little Jimmy fancied himself as a pilot, but instead of following his dream he does what is expected of him.
Little Jimmy then wonders why he feels so unfulfilled in life and is always looking for distractions to take his mind off the life that he is living and funnily enough his dream life that he is not living.
When we can make life a love to and a choose to rather than a have to or should do then we know that we are living by our own values and inspiration.
There are times when I have taken jobs that are completely out of alignment with who I am, but my focus was always on my vision and I saw those times as stepping stones along the way and I used them to my advantage.
It is possible to be in a job that seems out of alignment with ourselves, by linking our highest values to doing the job.
My attitude is that I will do whatever it takes to live my ultimate life vision and if that means doing a menial job for a while, that is okay, but with the consciousness of gratitude and realising that I am choosing to do it and not that I have to do it.
I once worked two jobs 80 hours per week, 7 days per week and saved 80 percent of my income so I could take my life and vocation to the next level. I did this for 9 months without a break. Like I said, whatever it takes!
Going back to Little Jimmy—if he saved the money he worked for during the week at the mill, to pay for flying lessons on the weekend, or to save for pilots school, then he would feel better about going to work and he would say, “I choose to do this job, so in the future I will get to do what I would love to do!” Then he would know that he is living his own life and not anyone else’s.
Make sense? 😉
Todays power question: “If I could do anything with my life then what would that be?”
Todays power statement: “I am the commander of my life and my daily decisions create my destiny!”
