Early To Rise – Can Being An Early Riser Make You More Productive And Successful?
Are you early to rise and can being an early riser make you more productive and successful?
My personal experience of being an entrepreneur is that when I get up early and get to work I am vastly more productive and successful throughout my day than if I get up late.
If I get up late, I always feel like I am playing catch up and never really get caught up. When I am playing catch up I feel some low level anxiety and then this decreases productivity as well.
These day’s I like to rise at 4am which may seem early to most, but it’s an amazing feeling as it gives me a feeling of having the edge. After a quick shower, I jump on my bike and cycle 8km to my office were I meet with my team at 5am and by 8am we have as much done as many people get done in a day.
I get to watch the sun come up over the mediterranean as I write this blog post right now. As most people are waking from their slumber I am producing results and it feels great.
I have always liked the idea of this. When I was a child I was inspired by the Rocky movies and would get up in the morning before everyone else and go for a run on the beach and do shadow boxing and push ups. I would get home before the rest of the family had got out of bed. I was early to rise!
When I lived in L.A I would meet my meditation teacher at 5am and we would go for a run in the Hollywood hills and then I would join his meditation class at 7am. We were both early risers and it was such a great way to start the day.
There have also been times when I have got into a rut and stayed up late and then slept in till 9am each morning and looking back I can see the contrast of how I have felt and how my life has been like and it is definitely much more enjoyable when I am early to rise.
Not everyone is the same, but for most productive and successful people being early to rise is a large part of their success.
Some people need more sleep than others as well. Two highly productive and successful people that I know, who are early risers are Tony Robbins and John Assaraf. They both live on about 5 hours sleep per night and generally get up at 5am.
not all productive and successful people are early risers
Like I said not all productive and successful people are early risers, so it is not a blue print for success. Tim Ferris the author of “The Four Hour Work Week” “The Four Hour Body” and “The Four Hour Chef” goes to bed at 2am and gets up at 10am, so he sleeps 8 hours per night, sleeps in and is a highly productive and successful entrepreneur.
I try and get to bed for 10pm which is said to be the optimal time for the liver to repair and regenerate itself. By 4am I have had 6 hours sleep and then often in the afternoon I will have a 30 minute power nap. I wake up naturally after 30 minutes and feel completely refreshed.
I believe that this 30 minute power nap is worth at least an hour and a half of regular sleep during the night. If I were to allow myself to sleep past 4am, saying that I went to bed at 10pm then I would not wake naturally until between 6.30 and 7am.
Would you like to be part of the growing early to rise culture? Give it a go for 30 days. It will take about a week to get used to it and you may need an accountability buddy to do it with, otherwise it can be hard to drag your body out of bed when you are not yet accustomed to it.
Track your success throughout the month and you may well triple your productivity and success as I did when I choose to be an early riser!
