7 habits of highly Effective Jedi’s, Ninja’s and Badasses
There are 7 habits and principles that all Jedi’s, Ninja’s and Badasses abide by. Understanding and applying these 7 principles until they become knit with habit and ingrained in your unconscious, will allow you a high level of Badassery!
1. Initiative: Means that somebody has the ability to make decisions or to act alone; without the help, advice or input of other people. It is surprising how few people demonstrate any sort of initiative in their lives.
In fact most people are simply running on the programs that they received growing up and from the those around them. Initiative is key to being an entrepreneur. What made ninja different from samurai was initiative. The samurai honoured the status quo while the ninja questioned it.
The Samurai worked for a Lord and followed orders, while the ninja worked for himself and followed his heart.
Initiative takes courage, because it means stepping out from the crowd into the unknown and potentially making mistakes. But the rewards for initiative are endless and used intelligently makes for a fulfilling life.
2. Focus: Many agree that this is the number one key ingredient for success in anything. To master anything in life takes focus. Results are created through focus.
The sun shines on and warms the Earth, but if you take a magnifying glass, you can focus the suns energy to a point where it becomes like a laser and will set fire to a piece of paper within minutes. The same piece of paper could be left in the sun for weeks and nothing would happen to it without the focus.
Nothing worthwhile will be created without focus and with laser focus, time can be bent and results can happen at a supernatural rate. It is through this intense focus that the Jedi are able to manifest their supernatural abilities.
3. Vision: Without a vision, the people perish, it is said! Initiative and focus without vision is chaos and meaningless. Focus will forever be shifting without a clear compelling vision. When I took the initiative and travelled to Japan to be trained by the Ninja Grandmaster and his students, I was incredibly focused while there because I had a vision.
I was going to reach a high level of competency so I could return to my home town in Ireland, open a dojo and give people the highest level martial arts training in the province and that is what I did!
I met other westerners in Japan who also went there to train with the ninja grandmaster, but they did not have a clear vision and soon they became engulfed in day to day living in Japan and neglected their martial arts studies. All masters in life have a compelling vision for their future and they live it more and more with each passing day.
4. Consistency: This has been my downfall in the past and is for many people. Many entrepreneurs lack consistency. Farmers are good at consistency. 7 days a week, 365 days a year a farmer works, because that is his life and most farmers are born into farming and that is all they know.
To truly become The Master Jedi of your life, you must develop the habit of being consistent and then your level of badassery will go through the roof. Through consistent effort we see compounded results, barriers get shattered and breakthroughs happen.
Anytime I didn’t succeed, I can look back and see that it was only because I took my eye off the ball and didn’t keep going. My main successes in life was through consistent effort until I achieved. And even after the achievement we must still keep going, because it is the journey that counts and who we become on that journey.
5. Continuous improvement: You must fall in love with growth and learning. If you are not continually improving then you become stagnant and we all know that stagnant water doesn’t just stay the same, it gets worse! Be like the flowing river that is always taking in new information, developing and cultivating itself.
I left school at 16 with average grades, with no further formal education, but I have studied harder in the two decades since then than I ever did in school. There are people who knew me when I was younger that can’t understand how I have become the person who I am and all I can say is that it is a commitment to continuous improvement.
There were people in my kickboxing club when I was a teenager that can no longer lift their leg past their waste, yet I am more flexible than ever. I simply made a conscious decision that I was never going to become stagnant.
6. Service: If you really want to be a Badass, be of service! Being a badass has got nothing to do with being cool. Badasses couldn’t care less if they are perceived as being cool or not, in fact they care little of what people think in general.
Wannabe badasses don’t understand this so they walk around wearing T.shirts saying “Look how awesome I am!” If they were really a Badass they would have a T.shirt on saying “Look how awesome you are!”
This is because badasses aren’t focused on themselves as much as they are focused on serving others. When you take the focus off yourself and put it on others then all fear disappears…and that’s Badass!
I first learned this when I was 12 years old. I was staying at my grandmothers in Belfast and was out sneaking around at 2am pretending to be Batman, when a car handbrake turned at the bottom of the road. 2 yobs got out and they were drinking and laughing about the car the had just stolen.
A cat was walking past and one of them beckoned the cat then grabbed it by the tail and started swinging it around his head. Being an animal lover, something clicked in my brain and I started charging towards the guy. I felt no fear whatsoever. All I was focused on was saving the cat from being splatted on a wall.
There were two fences in my way that I had to vault and by the time I was over the second one the yob had let go of the cat which spun through the air and landed about thirty feet away on its feet and then ran away.
As soon as I saw that the cat was safe I stopped charging and noticed that the two yobs were completely oblivious to my presence. At that point I had a realisation that if I had been confronted in the street by these two I would be trembling at the knees, but because I took the focus off myself and put it on my outcome of saving the cats life, I experienced no fear.
In life when we put our attention on and have an intention in serving others then we will experience much less fear, embarrassment, or any other disempowering feelings and we will be much more effective and fulfilled human beings in the process.
7. Faith: You can be an Atheist and still have faith. Faith can be seen as persevering when the odds are stacked against you or when you don’t see a clear path a head. To be an outstanding martial artist you have to have faith in what you are being taught even when it doesn’t make sense in your head.
In the Karate Kid Movie, Mr Miyagi gets Daniel to paint the fence and sand the floor as part of his karate training. This challenges Daniel’s limited understanding, but fortunately he just has enough faith to keep going with it long enough to realise that he is learning powerful blocks to punches and kicks with the continuous hand movements he is performing while carrying out the work.
Having faith sometimes means just being humble enough to realise that you don’t have all the answers and maybe everything is working out perfectly on a level that you don’t yet understand.
There you have The 7 Habits of highly effective Jedi’s Ninja’s and Badasses. To cultivate and develop these to a high level within yourself I have created the One Thousand Day Challenge. There is actually an 8th habit as well which you will discover in the One Thousand Day Challenge! This can be found in my previous few blog posts.
