Going The Extra Mile – What Makes A Successful Business Leader
Going the extra mile is a term that many successful business leaders understand and use in their business dealings with customers and others in their everyday life. There are also many people in business that hear this concept and don’t understand it and then wonder why their business is failing?
To go the extra mile simply means to provide more value than is expected or is initially offered. Going the extra mile is something that I have always lived by in my coaching practice.
This would often look like sending a new client a free copy of my book in the post. Or at the end of a coaching program offering a free bonus session, or giving a long term client free access to my online membership program. This all surpasses the clients expectations, adds more value than is originally offered, and is known as going the extra mile.
Going the extra mile is an attitude of mind and at the start we must think of ways in which we can do this in business with our customers and clients. If we have a large business then we can set up a system that automatically does this.
In our everyday dealings at first we must consciously make the effort to go the extra mile, and then what happens after a while of doing this is that it becomes a part of who we are.
If we are in business and want to become an effective business leader then the practice of going the extra mile is vital to our long term growth and expansion. When we go the extra mile, we get repeat business and people talk about us to their friends and family, in a positive way that is!
In a highly competitive business world, this is how we can stand out from the crowd, because honestly not that many businesses go the extra mile. Think of a company now that has gone the extra mile for you!
You may be able to think of one or two and that is it. You have also more than likely recommended this company to others and you will be going back them again.
Check out the video of this teacher who goes the extra mile for his students. Do you think that they will ever forget him?
The billionaire Richard Branson is someone who understands the concept of going the extra mile and instills it in his companies and employees.
My favourite airline to fly with is Richard Branson’s Virgin Airlines. When I fly with them I feel like I am in upper class, even though I am in economy class. Aside from the up to date technology and comfortable, aesthetically pleasing interior of the planes, the service is second to none.
I am a vegan and had forgotten to pre-order a vegan meal when booking my tickets. Only remembering this when I was being served my in flight meal I mentioned to the flight attendant that I was vegan, but I had forgotten to order my meal when booking.
The flight attendant informed me that they didn’t have any vegan meals on board, but she would have me one made up and brought down from upper class. I was astonished at this and received the best fresh in-flight vegan meal I have ever had, silver service style, much to the envy of those sitting in my row.
You see I will never forget that and any time a conversation pops up about travel or airlines I mention that Virgin Airlines is my favourite. So because of going the extra mile, which wasn’t a big deal for them, they now have a customer for life and free word of mouth marketing from me.
Richard Branson is not a multi billionaire by simple chance. He has the attitude of going the extra mile, which in my opinion is a big reason why!
