The 4 Agreements For Leadership – Financial Freedom in 100 Days #30
Leadership is confidence and this confidence will be deepened by the understanding and practice of the 4 agreements.
At one time in my life I didn’t see myself as a leader and I didn’t demonstrate leadership qualities. I was too shy and afraid to stand out front. I didn’t want to get things wrong, I didn’t want to look stupid, I didn’t want people to think negatively of me or think that I was being over baring or controlling.
So I had many limiting beliefs around leadership and also my own identity and who I was. I didn’t set out to become a leader, I just enjoyed teaching and helping others and by doing this, people starting seeing me as a leader and a visionary and this started to shift my own self image and I became an effective leader.
There is a book called “The 4 Agreements” and even though I haven’t read the book I have read reviews and I have my own understanding of what the 4 agreements are and how they can be applied to leadership and being an effective leader.
Agreement 1. Don’t make assumptions
When we can start to acknowledge that everything is an assumption, then we will see the world very differently. We can all agree that the sky is blue, right? Well apart from when it is grey or black or red. Most people will agree on the colour of the sky but it is still an assumption. Sometimes I will look at the ocean and it looks green to me, but Victoria will tell me that it is blue, but I see green, so who is right? We are both making assumptions.
We often assume that what we believe is true, but haven’t we all held a firm belief about something to only find out that we were mistaken. We assume that Santa Clause is real because our parents tell us so. We assume that Neil Armstrong walked on the moon because the US government told us so. And of course much information has come to light that Santa is not real and Neil Armstrong didn’t really walk on the moon.
Great leaders act on the best information they have available, but they do not assume that it is true. A great warrior does not assume that his opponent is a push over for any reason, as this can fatal.
Agreement 2. Always do your best
Every morning I wake up, I say to myself, “today I am going to do my best” My best may not be what I demonstrated a week previously because of whatever reason. Maybe the alignment of the planets, maybe I tired, maybe I had a challenging encounter, but still I am doing my best.
A great way to release judgement of others is to realise that everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available. So we are all always doing our best, it is merely the realisation of this that will take us out of judgement of ourselves and judgement of others. When there is no judgement then our best will become a lot better. This is a profound concept to understand.
Agreement 3. Always be impeccable with your word
To me this simply means to speak with honesty and integrity. It has been proven that a lie weakens us and the truth from our point of view strengthens us. People appreciate and respect honesty and transparency, they become drawn to it and the is a trait of a great leader and those with leadership qualities. We want to be able to trust those that are leading us and to do that we must believe that they are impeccable with their word.
Agreement 4. Don’t take anything personally
You simply cannot be a great leader and take things personally otherwise you will be swayed by other peoples opinions and this makes for a poor leader. What someone else thinks of you has got nothing to do with you. Nothing is ever personal because each of us as individuals internally represent the world from information taken in through the five senses. Great leaders mind their own business and get on with things without any concern of the opinions or judgements of others. No great leader ever had a purpose of being a nice person, as that is the surest way to mediocrity.
